Drumming Up Interest In School

14 Dec

At Olympic High School, Queens University professors Dr. Jayne Johnston, Dr. Cheri Clark and Dr. Rebecca Engen are using a $5,250 Cultural Project grant to help keep at-risk students interested in school. “Beat It: A Drumming Adventure” is a multi-disciplinary arts therapy educational program that strives to help students make connections to other cultures and improve communications skills through the use of the vibrant cultural history of the drum. Students in the program are able to make their own drum out of clay, experience how the drum is used by different cultures, and how to play it themselves.
